Korosi adalah proses elektrokimia /redoks yang terjadi pada logam karena adanya reaksi dengan lingkungan sehingga menghaslkan zat yang tidak diinginkan.
Contoh korosi adalah perkaratan pada besi.
Peristiwa korosi, logam akan mengalami oksidasi dan udara mengalami reduksi. Karat besi adalah senyawa Fe₂O₃.xH₃O.
Reaksi yang terjadi :
Fe ------> Fe²⁺ + 2e
O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e ----> 4OH⁻
Fe sebagai anode mengalami oksidasi
O₂ sebagai katode mengalami reduksi
Ion Fe²⁺ yang ada di anode kemudian mengalami oksidasi membentuk ion Fe³⁺ yang kemudian membentuk senyawa Fe₂O₃.xH₃O.
Jadi korosi besi terjadi karena faktor adanya oksigen dan air
Pelapisan timah pada kaleng besi dilakukan dengan cara Electroplating atau disebut juga penyepuhan yang berfungsi untuk melindungi logam terhadap korosi.
Pada proses ini, timah berfungsi sebagai anode dan besi yang akan disepuh dijadikan katode.
Katode Fe : Fe²⁺ + 2e ----> Fe
Anode Sn : Sn -----> Sn²⁺ + 2e
Besi dalam deret volta terletak disebelah kiri timah sehingga lebih mudah teroksidasi dibandingkan timah karena besi memiliki E reduksi yang lebih negatif dari timah.
Besi yang dilapisi timah akan terlindungi dari reaksi dengan oksigen yang ada di udara sebagai pencetus reaksi korosi.
Tetapi apabila terjadi kerusakan timah pada kaleng karena tergores , maka akan terjadi reaksi elektrokimia yang menyebabkan korosi dimana besi sebagai anode (terjadi oksidasi)
